We'll start our tour of southern Sardinia's capital and largest city of Cagliari on the Golfo di Cagliari (Cagliari Gulf). Then we head southwest along the coast near Pula and Nora and then continue on or near the coast south-west first, then north-west and neighbors Sant'Antioco Calasetta. We next visit the island town of San Pietro. Finally we return to Sardinia and the mainland then north to finish our visit to Costa Verde.
Cagliari has a population of about one hundred and sixty miles or more than twice that when you count the suburbs. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The city fought alongside the Savoyards against the French Revolution. When it became clear they would not be rewarded for their loyalty, all Cagliari rose up against the Savoyards and expelled them and their allies in the Piedmont. Each year, the last weekend of April Cagliari celebrating insurgency in its Sardigna Die (Sardinia Day). Their independence was short-lived.
The old city is called Castello (Castle). It is situated on a hill and offers an excellent view over the Gulf of Cagliari, which is also known as Angels of the Gulf. Most of the old city walls white limestone remain intact. Look for two towers thirteenth century white limestone, the Torre di San Pancrazio (St. Pancras Tower) and Torre dell'Elefante (Elephant Tower). DH Lawrence, who wrote the Sea and Sardinia, and Lady Chatterly's Lover from Cagliari Jerusalem a "white".
The remnants of the old town include the Second Century Anfiteatro Romano (Roman Amphitheatre), parts of which are fairly well preserved, an aqueduct, ancient cisterns, and the ruins of a small temple. Summers, you can attend outdoor concerts and operas and concerts in the amphitheater. The Archaeological Museum (archaeological museum) in a fourteenth-century castle contains many artifacts from unique stone structures called Sardinian Nuraghe mentioned in the companion paper I love touring Italy - Central Sardinia.
The Duomo Cathedral of Santa Maria (Cathedral of St. Mary's) was built in the seventeenth century but has undergone major renovations in the 1930s. Other churches worth seeing include the fifth-century Basilica di San Saturnino (St. Saturnino Bascilica), the seventeenth century Church of St. Lucifer, and the fourteenth century Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonaria.
Many of the old districts of Cagliari retain their charm. Some 1930 buildings were built in Art Deco style, while others such as the Palazzo di Giustizia (Court) to comply with a fascist style Neoclassist. Cagliari also claims one of the longest beaches in Italy, the beach Poetto astonishing 8 miles (13 km), once famous for its fine white sand and one of the largest fish markets in Italy, Mercato di San Benedetto (St. Benedict Market.).
Pula whose population is about seven thousand known for its beautiful beaches, bays and coves. Marvel at the flocks of flamingos in the marshes. Just outside of Pula is the site of Nora, founded by the Phoenicians, and perhaps the oldest town in Sardinia. The excavation, while not yet complete, have discovered a multitude of ruins from the days of Carthage and Rome.
