What is the normal percentage commission for sales rep for a wine? I was wondering if anyone out there can give me information on what kind of commission percentage is typical for wine sales representatives working for the distributors of wine? Is geography, experience, or any other factors that influence this percentage? If yes, how much effect? I just took a job with a small wine importer / distributor in the Washington DC area, I pay 8% commission, plus a monthly stipend of $ 575 for expenses. I've no previous experience in the field of wine. I try to assess if I am compensated fairly. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I know that representatives who are on fixed salary all the way up to 7% commission. If you make 8%, which sounds good to me ... especially since you live / work in an expensive city.
The monthly allowance sounds a bit low though. For example, we get $ 450 for a car allowance and an additional $ 60/month for the phone. Of course, it's $ 65 less than what you get, but our gas prices are lower here too.
I came into the world of wine by working for a small distributor. It can be very difficult but very rewarding. Just be ready to work. The chances are your wallet does not contain many well known brands, so you are solely responsible for their implementation.
Good luck and welcome to the company!
