Teen Drinking - Tips for Parents At your teen goes smelling of alcohol or drunk? Showed signs of teen drinking and you do not know how to broach the subject? Have you wondered if your teen has been tempted by their friends to drink, and what their reaction will be? Wondering if "spend the night at a friend" really means "to drink" the night, said their hung --- look over the morning?
Unfortunately I can not answer "yes" to all the above. As a father of three teenagers, I can honestly say that I have witnessed all the above and avoided discussing alcohol with them. I do not encourage drinking and I did a bad example by abusing them in front, I just find it easy to avoid the subject. I write this article because I found something that worked very, very well for my family, and it can save you much grief.
Do not debate drinking with my 17 years, has worked OK until I found a half bottle of whiskey in his car. Suddenly, reality hit me in the face and I panicked. Should I scream and scream and put it on the restriction of one month? Do I talk rationally with him and try to reach some agreement? What if he denies that was his, and claims he never touches things? So I'll have to face lie about the over eating.
Where can I find help in this situation? My wife and I discussed possible tactics - it was all for the heavy-handed approach (restrictions and economic sanctions), while I preferred to solve the problem while avoiding confrontation (not the best choice, I confess I Whimper).
There was much at stake, as we also had 15 and 13 - year old boys who are watching that activity and take notes more mental than ever in any classroom.
I wanted to find an approach that has been a compromise choice between me and my wife. One possibility was to hire a psychologist, psychiatrist or counselor, but I realized that the effort can be successful. Besides, the young would agree?
I decided to "surf" for some suggestions. After all, the web is the information highway "and I needed to know quickly to help keep my children to have serious problems on the roads. I do not really know what I'm looking in particular Perhaps other parents have similar experiences and share their ideas on the web, or perhaps I could find a reliable source of information that would not cost an arm and a leg.
Just because we get married and have kids does not mean that we are experts in handling each situation that instant occurs - would not it be great if parents had some sort of instruction manual "to refer to time then?
After much research I decided to buy an ebook written by a probation officer and family therapist specializing in helping families develop the skills necessary to not involve their children in the justice system juvenile. Not only did I decide to buy this ebook, because the richness of the author's experience has to offer, but because the author's step - by - step advice on how to broach the subject of alcohol with your teen, how to establish house rules (and the appropriate consequences), the appropriate and effective use of law enforcement, and even exactly what to do (and Don'ts) when they come home drunk (which is really, really good to be prepared for). Here is an excerpt from the ebook, in response to a parent whose daughter was home drunk:
If your daughter at home under the influence, make sure it is not in immediate danger because of his drinking, but wait until she is sober to solve the problem. When she sobers up, say / do the following: Say (with your poker face best), "I noticed you came home drunk last night. I felt shocked and concerned." Then Posted on May 19, 2010.
