Drinking among teenagers, what you can do as a parent

The relationships we have with our older children have an impact on their future development as they become well-adjusted adults who take their place in the community. To give your teen the best start in life, they need to give love, security, a warm family environment and friendly, and a strong set of values and standards of living their lives.

From a young age, children need boundaries. This helps to define end of life, what is acceptable behavior and what is not tolerable. As the children reach adolescence, they need to be taught responsibility within their boundaries defined as a teenager. It is the duty of a parent, not the prerogative of taking an active role in the life of your teenager.

As a parent, if you do not agree with teenage drinking, express your opinion with other parents, and stand up for what you feel is the right thing. You may find that there are many other parents out there who agree with you. By creating a network of parents in your community that includes parents and friends if possible for your teen, you can work together to create a structure strong and safe for your teen to socialize in.
