Signs and symptoms of alcoholism and drug addiction What are the real signs and symptoms of alcoholism and drug addiction? When do you cross the line between being a social drinker or drug user - or even an occasional drug user - to become a "full-fledged addict" or alcoholic?
The answer lies not in the "how much is consumed (although they are often paint a fairly accurate), but in the after-effects or consequences of the consumption or use, I'll come to a minute ...
It also seems to be the misperception that you must be totally "down and - about living in the streets - before they can be considered an addict. This is simply not the case. There are many people leading "normal" lives in a stable job, etc. with families who are also drug addicts and alcoholics.
The thing about addiction - which transcends all cultural, social, ethnic and religious boundaries - and any other possible categories that you can possibly think of. It ranges from the complete junkie living on the street, the business man of great power who uses alcohol or drugs to keep it current. It can happen to anyone.
So, if you ask yourself - or someone you love deeply - the signs and symptoms following should help you make an accurate diagnosis ...
1.) Whether you or someone you love excessive withdrawal symptoms, such as tremors, mood swings, depression, anxiety?
2.) Have you or a loved one has experienced increased levels of tolerance and need to make / drink more to achieve the same effect?
3.) Have you or the person you care about experienced feelings of remorse about drinking / drugs - and promised to reduce or quit but failed several times?
4.) Having problems - at work or even with the law - after drinking or using?
5.) Often, drink or use only - and are increasingly displaying behavior such as anti-social?
Even answering yes to any of these questions could indicate a real problem. If you answered yes to two or more such assistance should be sought immediately.
It is important that you take any kind of substance abuse seriously because the consequences can be devastating and potentially fatal if you do not. There is nothing shameful to admit to a problem with alcohol or drugs. Awareness is the first step on the road to recovery now and help is easily and quickly available.
When asking for help, it is important that you understand the nature of addiction. The drug is now widely accepted medically as a disease. I prefer to think that it is ill-being, disease of the mind first.
As far as I'm concerned, the dependence is primarily a spiritual problem, something Andrew Weil, MD, sums up perfectly in his book "Natural Health, Natural Medicine", pg. 135. "Addiction is not a pharmacological or psychological problem, and can not be solved by the methods of psychology or pharmacology. It is basically a spiritual concern because it represents an attempt to reach the fullness evil, inner experience and completeness satisfaction. "
That is why I think so many people be wrong when drug treatment - because they inevitably end up treating the symptom rather than the cause.
In treating alcoholism, drug abuse - or any addiction for that matter - as essentially a spiritual problem, you get to the root of the matter and treat addiction in which all causal healing begins and ends in the end .
