The effect of alcohol has a greater impact on the brain as different parts of the brain are more sensitive than other parts of the body. The transmission of impulses in the brain and nervous system may be damaged due to excessive consumption of alcohol. The chronic abuse of alcohol damages a person physically and mentally. Loss of balance, impotence, lack of sensation of feet and hands, tremor and blindness are the physical effects of alcohol abuse. Mental effects of alcohol are the lack of intellectual capacity, incapable of learning and mental confusion. A condition in which a person has symptoms of mental confusion, extreme agitation, anxiety, tremors, rapid pulse and the illusion is known as delirium tremens and this condition is due to the excessive consumption of alcohol.

Alcohol causes liver damage and if damage is severe, the condition is known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis causes of liver failure, liver cancer and ultimately leads to the death of the person. The liver is an organ that is used to expel waste and other toxins, and participate in many vital processes of the body. Liver also breaks down the processes and alcohol consumed, so that the liver is more affected than any other body part.

Excessive use of alcohol leads to chronic infections and inflammation of the stomach or gastritis and inflammation of the digestive system. Inflammation of the stomach and digestive system leads to ulceration. Perforation of the intestine and stomach can cause death and the food is not digested or absorbed properly when there is an inflammation of digestive system. Poor nutrition, malnutrition, changes in lifestyle and self-neglect are the reasons for the inflammation and infection. Diseases such as pneumonia, kidney and urinary tract infections, renal failure and pancreatitis are also due to inflammation.

Malnutrition in the body is another cause of alcohol and that deficiency of vitamins is due to the inability to absorb nutrients or absence of various vitamins. Vitamin B1 or thiamine causes memory problems like disease and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Alcohol reduces blood flow to muscles and muscle pain are common symptoms. Excessive alcohol consumption causes cardiovascular diseases such as alcohol consumption leads to high blood pressure that damages the heart muscle is known as cardiomyopathy. Another condition is arrhythmia or irregular heart beat which is considered part of emergency drinking after several days. Cardiovascular problems lead to heart failure or stroke. Alcohol consumption causes sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction in men and there is also a higher risk of cancer in different parts of the body.

Alcohol also affects the functioning of the body such as the involuntary actions like breathing and the gag reflex that prevents choking. Stomach is irritated by alcohol and due to this irritation, vomiting, but vomiting into a deep sleep can be dangerous as the person can suffocate while vomiting. Alcohol also increases the ulcer in the stomach and slows healing.
