My mother has an old house that has a lead pipe from the external valve carrying drinking water Is it safe?
Assuming you are in the United Kingdom, the responsibility of the tap water company ends outside. From there, the house is the problem of your mother, I fear. So, if it is renewed with a tube alkathene modern one, it must pay for the work itself.
Lead is not good for you but (as long as you do not usually lick, eat, breathe lead dust or working with molten lead) its dangers can be exaggerated by the health and the industry safety. If your mother is worried, I suggest that it directs water for a while before filling the kettle in the morning to replace the water that has been in contact with lead pipes overnight.
When ingested, lead is a poison that slowly builds in the body, and in extreme cases, it begins to cause brain damage and in extreme cases could possibly be lethal. Be realistic, your mom is showing signs of going to a little AG-ga? If not, then if she is young, I do not think you need worry about it.
I had a length of lead pipe in my incoming power for 35 years, and recent tests show my IQ above normal. Yet, without the head, maybe I was a genius .....
I would say no, tell your local water agency that you pay your bills telling them that their equipment is not suitable for use, he was interned for and poses serious health problems
N the change.
This is a clear link to have a look at http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/diseases/lead/en/
I would like to change for security reasons!
Most houses have this
Lead is a no no, its better if you had copper pipe for drinking
if you can afford to upgrade the pipes is a good idea, but if you havnt had lead poisoning in panic now have its obviously not a problem. I do not want to be rude, but your mom old enough for a Council grant. they can help.
Contact your water company of the mother. lead pipes for drinking water are not safe at all. The body can not get rid of the head and it is toxic. Meanwhile, tell your mother to run the tap for a short period in the morning before she uses the water for tea. This flower any lead that has accumulated during the night. It would also make better use bottled water until the pipe has been changed. I am disgusted that your mother has been put at risk like that when we live in a modern world. Profits before people again.
no its not .. Poisoning may result from drinking water contaminated by lead.
It is probably reasonably safe if left alone, and not tampered with or corrupted about. The water flow in the pipe over the years has put a very thin layer inside the pipe, especially if it is in an area with hard water.
If work is planned on or around the pipe, then take the opportunity to have replaced the service of plastic, as is the norm today.
You are also unlikely to get a lead poisoning from this pipe, as you are unlikely to undergo copper poisoning from the rest of the plumbing in the house.
They used them for years. I guess there is very little contamination by lead.
Id leave.
It is not safe. Have they changed as soon as possible.
