With regard to weight gain and management, What is the difference between consumption of soda 0 calories and water? for a soda is sodium and caffeine both dehydrate you. If I drink diet soda and then try to drink water to hydrate I get bloated. I hate to admit it because I do not love but just drink lots of water each day, enough that you're constantly going to the toilet. Youre body will begin to regulate your sense of need water, drink what you'll need and you will not go to the bathroom all the time. The water is far superior
It is a very strange doctor who wrote a book titled "Many of your body cries for water" - it is an Indian (India) and totally dedicated to get you to drink water. It is clearly stated: water and non-diet cola - which is too bad. It's nice to have a diet cola sometimes.
You can get the book used for anything on Amazon. I can not say whether things in the book are still true, but they are so interesting.

... I have seen many overweight people who eat too much food, but having a diet soda (I think they have managed to convince because they do not have the calories of a glass, they can have an extra sandwich. These people are still pretty fat, I noticed (they lose nothing)
