in fact any human emotion (or lack of emotion) could be an excuse for excessive consumption of alcohol.
Age limit is a major reason.
Kid will always want to do wat they are not allowed. Eventually, they consider that alcohol is the bravery, something grew, and manufacturers of alcoholic beverages are traffic along their wares with drinking in an intelligent, sexy, manly and what have you.
In Southent Europe (Italy, Greece, S. France) where there are no such restrictions, excessive consumption of alcohol is not a problem, alcoholism and much lower rates. Children get a sip of wine in casual family gatherings and festivals (they generally decrease after lunch), and it is not illegal to drink a glass if you so please to a younger age .

Nine: found that there was a piece of lettuce in the teeth at the end of the day you do not remember eating any salad.

Six: Your girlfriend threw all your dirty porn mags and she found, including your secret hideout
Five: You've found your liquor cabinet when parents are not supposed to be at home for 24 hours
Four: graduates, anniversary, birth of the child, a friend got married
Three: Your ex-boyfriend was married then you've been alone since you broke up with him
Two: even ex-boyfriend is having a baby
And the number one reason for the excessive consumption of alcohol is of course a recent tear followed by a confession of your best friend that she is now sleeping with the man who broke my heart (turn around if you're a man, or keep the same if you're gay)
