What does "quasi sport" mean? (Source: Time) beer pong is not just the drinking game of choice for twenty something this century thinkers, is a cottage industry and quasi sport with mass-market 8-ft. tables aluminum beer pong for sale.
I do not know the meaning of "quasi sport" here. Quasi assembly means. Does that mean beer pong is a small industry and is similar to sports that require 8-foot long tables?
Also, could I say "beer pong is a sport of mass quasi-market 8-ft."? Do I need "" here?
Thank you!
Almost means "semi". Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which have been in the news lately, were quasi-governmental organizations. They were not subject to any governmental transparency laws that public agencies are required, but they were not totally deprived, either because they had close ties to government regulation.
Essentially it means that sport as a sport, but it is not really recognized as a "real" sport. In your example, "quasi" is used rather loosely, which is common in American English.
Often what begins as a game between friends turns into a real sport played in a wide geographical area. Pitching washers, for example, was a game bar, or a quasi-sport, but it has evolved into a sport because a lot of people play.
When a sport has gained wide acceptance, it is no longer a sport almost.
Again, is used almost without tightening. False sport could be a better term.
In addition, if a sport has no real skill involved, people might say it's almost a sport.
Quasi (Latin) means "near" or "pseudo". For example, see George Carlin golf, it's a game, but not a sport. You can also call if a sport almost on the criterion that if the ball is stationary when you hit it, it is not a sport.
