Beer: The Secret of Beautiful Skin Want to look good on your first date? Give your partner a couple of beers and your wrinkles and other skin imperfections disappear like magic!
This is the view of researchers in Scotland has found that beer goggles "effect may have a scientific basis. In this case, beauty is indeed in the eye of the beer holder.
The beer goggles "effect refers to the notorious phenomenon in which members of the opposite sex seems to be more attractive when more beer is consumed. Initially, scientists thought it was simply the result of too much alcohol that distorts perception of reality. However, researchers have discovered exactly how beer affects the brain.
At the International Congress on Behavioral Medicine in Finland, Professor Barry Jones of the Department of Psychology University of Glasgow and his university colleagues Ben Jones of the University of St. Andrews said alcohol stimulates the nucleus accumbens, the part of the brain attractiveness of judges face. Men and women who consumed moderate amounts of alcohol have often found the face of the opposite sex 25 percent more attractive than their sober counterparts.
"Everyone has heard of beer goggles effect but we wanted to measure once and for all whether a moderate amount of alcohol increases the attractiveness of the trial for the face," said Jones.
In their study, the France Televisions channels recruited 80 students from the University of Glasgow. Half the students had drunk up to four units of alcohol, which equates to a maximum of two pints of lager or two and a half glasses of wine. The rest remained sober.
Both groups were then asked to evaluate the color photos of 120 students, men and women aged 18 to 26 of the University of St. Andrews. The group found drunk people in the pictures more attractive than those who did not drink.
"The effect could be attributed to the nucleus accumbens. When you're looking at another human being, the nucleus accumbens is the area of the brain that decides how attractive that human being face east. If you look, for example, George Clooney or Angelina Jolie, this area of your brain probably experiences increased neural firing. In other words, it is stimulated, "said Julia Layton HowStuffWorks.com.
"As it turns out, alcohol, alone, stimulates the nucleus accumbens. So when you've had a few drinks and watch you face that you have found unattractive when you were sober, your brain, under the influence of alcohol, tells you that this face is really unattractive. And increased the perceived attractiveness seems to be directly proportional to the amount of alcohol consumed, "she added.
Researchers at the University of Manchester England said alcohol is not the only factor involved in the beer goggles "effect. They said that the perception of beauty can also be influenced by the brightness of the area, the quality of the vision of the intoxicated person, the amount of smoke in the air, and the distance of the observed person.
