Beer Brewing Systems

My BF is really in the IPA and Stout (means nothing to me, but I'm sure someone knows what that means). He was dying to brew his own beer, but has not really made any attempt to try if I wanted for Christmas to get him a beer kit but I have no idea where to start! Suggestions?
